Steps On How To Open A Sargent And Greenleaf Mechanical Lock

The sequence to open a Sargent and Greenleaf mechanical lock, per manufacturer’s instructions is to turn the dial 4 times to the left and stop on the first number, 3 times to the right to the second number, 2 times to the left to the third number and, turn lock slowly to the right until the bolt retracts. We find this instructions very confusing sometimes. Here is a much simpler way of opening your lock.

Usually the safe manufacturer will set a combination starting with a high number, low number and high number. For this example we are going to use the combination “80-30-65”.

Step #1

Turn the dial several times to the left and stop on “0”. This will be your starting point.

Step #2

From “0”, turn the dial 4 times to the left and stop on “80” in every turn.

Step #3

From “80”, turn the dial to the right and go directly to “30” and even though you are not going all the way around, it still counts as a full turn.  Do this two more times and stop on “30” every time.

Step #4

From “30”, go directly to “65”, once again you don’t have to go all the way around. Do this one more time.

Step #5

Once you stop on “65”, turn dial slowly to the right until it stops turning. You will feel a bit of resistance around “90”, but just keep going until you can’t turn it anymore. The dial should stop turning completely around “80” to “87”.

If dial doesn’t stop turning around the “80’s” mark, start the process over.

Step #6

Turn the handle either left or right to open safe.

*Important: When closing and locking the safe door, turn handle to the closing position and make sure you spin the dial several times.
